CBD Use During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Now that it’s legal, does that mean it’s safe? 5 local experts seek to find out.

BURLINGTON, VT, September 6 –

A panel discussion on CBD use during pregnancy, labor, and raising families features 5 local experts. The panel consists of Dr. Sarah Wylie, a practicing naturopathic doctor based in Burlington and Bristol with experience prescribing CBD to treat postpartum depression; Jessilyn Dolan, R.N., a former labor and delivery nurse, UVM opioid use researcher, nationally renowned expert on substance abuse during pregnancy and infancy, and hemp grower; Ashley Reynolds, owner of the popular CBD company Elmore Mountain Therapeutics and #CannaMom; Joanna Vinton, an herbalist and homebirth midwife assistant; and Shaina Levee, M.A., forum moderator, psychologist and researcher, and creator of Birth Love Family.

The panel, “CBD & Herbs for Raising VT Families”, takes place during the B. Love Family Festival held October 6, 2018 in Burlington, Vermont at Railyard Apothecary. It seeks to answer questions such as is it safe to take CBD while pregnant or lactating? Is it effective? Can it be used in place of prescription drugs that treat common ailments including morning sickness and muscle aches? Can CBD be given to children? What other herbs and plants offer similar a similar effectiveness to CBD? What herbs and plants have a longstanding history with women’s reproductive health? A literature review of current research on cannabis use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is being compiled with plans for publication in the Journal of Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and Health.

Currently, the bulk of research is largely inconclusive on safety and efficacy of cannabis use or is outdated. A lengthy literature review on the history of hemp use in women’s reproductive health compiled by Dr. Ethan Russo, suggests that the plant has been known to treat common pregnancy related issues including nausea, labor induction and hemorrhaging. A recent study performed by Dr. Thomas Hale records THC levels in breastmilk. Yet no research currently exists on the cannabidiol derivative known as CBD, exclusive of THC use.

B. Love Family Festival is a first of its kind event. It features musical performance by Myra Flynn, educational workshops, yoga and meditation, and a full day of kids’ activities. Birth Love Family is the presenting organization and aims to support parents in making informed decisions on birthing and raising children in Vermont.

B. Love Family Festival is a day-long celebration held in Burlington, Vermont. The festival celebrates Vermont’s birth and family culture while building community around holistic birthing and parenting. For more information, please visit www.birthlovefamily.com/festival.
